Japan-US R&D New Sensor Detects Toxic Gases

According to Japanese media reports, the research team of the Japan Institute of Materials and Materials (Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) released a message on the 7th of this month that they have successfully developed and detected Sarin. Materials that change the current mode after the gas is poisoned can rely on the smart phone to detect the relevant changes.

According to the report, in order to detect the poisonous gas spread early in the terrorist attacks, the research team envisages installing sensors using this material in public facilities, public transportation, etc.

The research team used "carbon nanotubes" with excellent electrical conductivity. The surface was coated with a thin film that cracked when the gas was sensed. Normally this material is not electrically conductive, but its conductivity is significantly improved after exposure to toxic gases.

Sensors are made by adding this material to a part line called a “near-range wireless communication tag”. The poisonous gas will change the current mode and can be identified by the proximity of the smartphone. If the tag is installed with the detector, it is in fact expected to form a system that will automatically issue an alarm when the gas is detected.

The materials developed by the research team can detect sarin and other toxic gases, and will strive to achieve detection of carbon monoxide and volcanic gases in the future. Ishihara Shinobu, chief researcher at Japan's Institute of Substances and Materials Research, said, "We will strive to put it into use before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics."
