Sinopec Qilu Branch received the Zibo City 2011 Science and Technology Award Decision Document. The UHMWPE technology development project undertaken by the Qilu Petrochemical Research Institute won the first prize for scientific and technological progress. The project started from the small-scale test and the mid-test to the industrial installations above 10,000 tons to achieve full-process development, and formed an independent UHMWPE resin process technology with international advanced level, so that the main performance of the third-generation high-performance fiber-specific UHMWPE resin meets or exceeds that of foreign countries.

According to the chief completion person of the project and Long Jianwen of the Academy, Qilu Branch has built a 3000-ton/year UHMWPE production facility using this technology. Based on the research and development of in-situ polymerization modified UHMWPE, the institute designed a polyethylene polymerization catalyst preparation device with a reasonable flow and complete functions, and an ethylene polymerization pilot device with advanced DCS control and polymerization reaction kinetics research capabilities. Through the study of catalysts, polymerization formulas and process conditions, the control of the relative molecular mass and microstructure of the resin was realized, and UHMWPE fiber-specific resin was developed. Verified by testing and spinning test, its main performance has reached or even exceeded the level of foreign special resin.

According to reports, in recent years, UHMWPE has developed rapidly in the field of high value-added products as the UHMWPE performance improvement and the processing technology have progressed. UHMWPE fiber is a new product developed in recent years. It is the third generation of high-performance fiber following carbon fiber and aramid fiber. It has outstanding properties such as low density, high modulus, UV resistance, abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and high strength. The existing three major fiber materials have the highest price/performance ratio. However, the special resin used in the production of UHMWPE fibers in China basically depends on imports.

In view of the rapidly growing market demand, the Qilu Petrochemical Research Institute expanded the original 1500 tons/year UHMWPE industrialized production unit by 3,000 tons/year. The industrialized device adopts the internal-cooled stirring paddle in the polymerization tank and combines with the semi-circular tubular structure of the jacket to effectively solve the problem of polymerization and heat transfer. The fiber and pipe special resin developed and produced on this device can be used for the production of multiple specifications of plates, pipes and profiled materials. The quality has been further improved, resulting in significant social and economic benefits.

Since then, the Qilu Petrochemical Research Institute has independently completed the basic design of a continuous production industrial plant process package of 10,000 tons or more through industrialized data collection and engineering amplification research, which laid the foundation for the formation of an integrated and innovative UHMWPE resin process technology and its investment. The production cost has obvious advantages compared with foreign countries.
