General Motors and Ford Motor Co. said in the report that the company’s sales in the Chinese market in the first half of the year have grown strongly. In the first half of this year, GM’s sales in China increased by 12.7%, while Ford’s sales increased by 21% over the same period.
The sales of the two automakers in the Chinese market have increased, but their position in the North American market has been rather unfavorable. In order to deal with the sharp decline in US car sales, General Motors and Ford Motor Co., Ltd. have laid off their staff in North America, closing down the depots and cutting production.
In restructuring the business to return to profitability, GM and Ford increasingly rely on emerging markets such as China to offset their losses in the United States. This year China’s car sales, including trucks and buses, are expected to reach 10 million.
Most global automakers are expanding their capacity to take a larger share in the Chinese market. Currently dominant in the Chinese automotive market is General Motors and Volkswagen.
General Motors stated that its sales volume in the Chinese market from January to June this year was 590,126, but sales growth in the first half was lower than the 18.5% in 2007.
Ford said that it sold 172,411 cars in China in the first half of the year, of which Ford brand passenger cars and commercial vehicles sold 103,698 vehicles, an increase of 15% from the same period last year.
