According to the latest forecast of the American Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA), US tire shipments in 2016 will exceed 315 million units, an increase of 0.7% from 2015. Replacement of passenger tire shipments will reach 206.8 million, an increase of 0.3% from 2015, surpassing the record set in 2014.
RMA pointed out that since the beginning of 2016, the U.S. economy has steadily improved, the price of fuel has been decreasing, and the mileage of vehicles has increased. This will undoubtedly create favorable conditions for the growth of total tire shipments. The association said that the original passenger car and light truck tire shipments will have the highest growth rate this year. Among them, the original passenger car tire shipments will increase 2.7% over the previous year, reaching 51.10 million units; while the original light truck shipments will increase by 1.8% to 4.5 million units.
On the other hand, replacement of light truck tire shipments will increase by 0.3% to 29.2 million units; replacement truck tire shipments will increase by 1.1% to 18.1 million units. According to RMA, shipments of original truck tires will drop by 2.9% to 6 million units. Nevertheless, shipments of 6.2 million units in 2015 were the highest level since 2006.
